Kate Patterson (DVM '09) is in her first year of a laboratory animal medicine residency and post-doctoral program at the University of Michigan Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (in their human medical school). This year has been focused on clinical veterinary medicine. She provides veterinary care to a variety of animal species including mice, rats, dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, non-human primates, and a llama. Weekly clinical rounds and bi-monthly grand rounds present opportunities to learn more about the clinical aspects of laboratory animal medicine, as well as practice her public speaking skills.

In addition to her clinical duties, Kate is studying other aspects of laboratory animal medicine including pathology, husbandry, regulatory compliance, and animal facility design. She will study each of these areas more in-depth during concentrations featured in the second year of the residency.

The third year of the residency program features the opportunity to join a research laboratory and complete a project that will provide the opportunity for hands-on research experience and a first author publication. Kate plans to complete her research project in the laboratories of the Section of Vascular Surgery. She plans to attend and give a presentation at the National Meeting of the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science in the fall of 2010 in Atlanta. Upon completion of her residency program, Kate hopes to find a position as a clinical laboratory animal veterinarian and to successfully pass the certification examination to be a member of the specialty board, the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
